Soma Nomaoi: A Samurai Festival in Fukushima

The “Soma Nomaoi” festival in Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture, brings the world of the samurai back to life in the modern age.

Soma-no-Maoi, a festival held in my city, brings the world of the samurai back to life in the modern age.
The sight of more than 400 mounted warriors in armor parading through the streets, competing on horseback and fighting for the sacred banner is a sight to behold.

The festival takes place annually in late May and is an inspiring blend of local pride, tradition, and sacred ceremony. Horses are considered sacred.

In the past, women were only allowed to participate as mounted warriors if they were unmarried and under 20 years of age, but this year the requirement was removed, and a record 40 women mounted warriors have participated in the festival.

Visitors from overseas are also welcome, and the number of English-speaking visitors is gradually increasing. It is an unforgettable experience to experience Japanese culture firsthand.
